I
know what it is like preparing to enter National Service. As a man (and possibly
some women too!) in Singapore it is one of the rites of passage that all of us
go through.
You may be called to serve in the Army, Navy or Air Force, or perhaps the Police Or Civil Defense units. There is excitement, uncertainty and apprehension.
One thing is for sure, no matter the service you are posted to, there will be a need for physical fitness.

Decision Making
You will need to jog, run, jump, sprint, and crawl.
You will also need to climb up structures and repel down them.
You will need to carry heavy loads over long distances.
And at the end of it all, despite the fatigue from these activities, you will need to make smart decisions with a clear mind. These decisions will directly benefit your mission, your safety and the safety of those around you as well.
If you are easily fatigued from physical tasks, your decision making will suffer and you put yourself, your buddies and your mission at risk.

Physical Stress - Due to increased fitness requirements.
As you can see, there are PLENTY of adjustments that you need to make. What you don't want, is to have a lack of fitness giving you additional headaches during the adjustment process.
If you are unfit, you will be under pressure to pass the physical tests like the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) and the Standard Obstacle Course (SOC). If you are fit, getting high grades in these tests is a simple matter.
Besides getting PAID with a cash reward for doing well in physical tests, you also have a great burden lifted from your shoulders.
This is because servicemen who cannot do well (different units have different requirements) on these tests have extra training, shorter weekends, and less privileges than those who do well.
Life And Death
One other issue is a VERY serious one. It is literally a life and death issue.
Every time there is a training injury reported in the news I feel sad because I believe that these can be avoided. I know that all the people in charge have done their very best to ensure the safety of the training exercise. But many of these injuries are caused by poor overall conditioning. This is a problem that must be addressed BEFORE a person enters national service.
You see... there is a very big lack of fitness in our population in general. This comes from too much desk bound studying, computer gaming and internet surfing. This makes our young men WEAK and unconditioned. This is NOT something that the trainers in the army can address. Because your pre-NS life is not in their hands. It is in YOUR hands.

General Fitness - Your body is just not able to perform the amount of physical work required in national service for example digging a trench, walking with heavy loads, charging up a hill

Chin-Ups - As a man you should strive for at least 15 if not 20 good chin-ups. Anybody can do it if they train correctly.

Broad Jump - The standard for an "A" is 243cm. This is the hardest thing to train, but with the right program it can be done

2.4km Run - This can be significantly improved fast with the right training program.

I
had been selected to join the elite Special Operations Counter
Terrorist Force. But I had a BIG problem with my standing broad
jump. I just could not get the 243cm needed for a Gold standard. I
only managed 220cm for a long and frustrating time. But with the
special training at the Genesis Performance Center I managed 248cm
